GODS

Unlike modern civilizations, the Ancient Greeks believed in many Gods. A different time and a different culture led to a different attitude towards religion.

The Gods of Mt. Olympus
Zeus

Father of all Greek Gods.

Born on Crete, Zeus is also the God of the Heavens and therefore responsible for the weather.Mostly recognized for bad weather, his weapon being a Thunderbolt, he is also responsible for good weather!

Zeus & his two brothers, Poseidon & Hades split up the Heavens & the Earth between the three of them. Zeus being the Ultimate God.
This after Zeus & his brothers  wrangled control from their father Cronus, in The Battle of The Titans.

Poseidon

Older brother of Zeus – Brother of Hades, Half-brother of Demeter.

Poseidon is also known under the name Neptune and is the God of the Seas.
He is responsible for `Earthly´ weather like storms, earthquakes,Volcanoes etc. Also for more clement weather.

It is said Poseidon changed a woman he impregnated, into a man so she could not bear his child!

Hades

Hades is the ruler of the Greek Underworld.Which is also known as Hades.
The Christians `Hell´, is reportedly derived from the same.

Hades rules the realm of The Shadows & The Dead,as this was all that was left him after Zeus & Poseidon had taken the Heavens & the Earth.

Hades wife Persephone, became The Queen Of The Underworld.

Hera

Wife of Zeus, who’s name is the (Greek) female version of `Hero´.

Hera was a jealous wife, but supported Zeus enormously in all his endeavors, but she also practiced vengeful revenge on her husbands lovers!

Aphrodite

The Goddess of Love.

By far the most beautiful & enchanting of all the Gods.(And after Zeus, probably the best Known of the Gods).
According that is, to `later legend´…in the earlier legends Aphrodite was considered a `Nasty piece of work´!!!
And was thus portrayed, as hideous in both looks and demeanor.

The daughter of Zeus and (it is widely believed), Dionne.
Aphrodite had two extra-marital children with her lover, Ares.

Ares

Ares, the Greek God of War, was the `Born in Wedlock-Son´, of Zeus and Hera.

It is also believed that he was born without `Human Intervention´ (As was later Jesus of Nazareth, born to Mary).

A zealous warrior, who loved the battle. Ares never married, but had many affairs.

Ares had an affair with Aphrodite. When the Sun-God Helios, informed Hephaestus, Aphrodite’s husband, of the affair, Hephaestus cast the pair in invisible chains, .. they were the laughing stock of the rest of the Gods.

Demeter

The Goddess of Agriculture & Fertility.

Demeter is a very important Goddess of the time. Much celebrated in Fertility-Festivals, such as the `Thesmophoria´.

The `Homeric Hymn´ to Demeter, describes the poignant story of her life  and the abduction of her daughter Persephone. It also refers to the The `Eleusinian Mysteries´. A cult which every five years, conducted `Initiations´, which rites, cultic worships, and beliefs were kept secret. The initiation rites apparently united the worshipper with god.

Demeter´s liaison with mortal, Iasion. Produced a son named Plutus.
