INTRODUCTION

Sparta, rose to become the ultimate superpower in the Ancient Greek world. Its origins were shrouded in mystery and legend, self-proclaimed descendants of Hercules with a divine right to settle in the region of Laconia.

The "life-span" of this city-state was from 900 - 146 B.C. (approx.). Within this time, Sparta developed itself from a small collection of villages("Komes") into a powerful and totally militaristic society, dedicated to war.
How did this change come about?
What were the reasons for such a drastic change in their social structure?

In the 5th Century B.C. Greece was under threat from Persian invasion. Millions of troops (according to ancient historians) massed against the Greeks. For all their advancements in technology and philosophy, the Greeks had one major disadvantage.... their lack of unity.

In the time of need, one city state would come to the fore-front,
the “Protesilaos” (the first hero that chose to land in Troy ’s shores and died!) and this example of selflessness and total obedience to their laws would influence countless other societies and civilization. Ancient Sparta in our days, in our modern times, is still seen by many to be an example of the perfect society, a “Utopia”... a new word that TOMAS MOUR inspired from Ancient Sparta.

To understand the Spartan World (“Spartiatikos Cosmos”), we must however look at the "bigger picture" of the ancient Greek world, as a result, Spartan-World will also look at the other Greek city states in an effort to bring the true picture of the Spartan world to life.

Both ancient and modern scholars and philosophers have studied the Spartan society and way of life in an effort to unravel some of its mysteries. The "Cosmos", "Spartan Hoplites", "the Agoge" are only a few of the subjects that will be covered in this website.

Modern and ancient texts will be used in an effort to bring a fresh and accurate approach to the Spartan way of life.

Spartan-World or “Spartiatikos Cosmos” in Greek, is a long term project, and will always be subject to updates.

As the website grows.... so will the Spartan World.
